North Conway, NH – Spring is here, but the ski season isn’t over yet for the Veterans, Service Members, and Families who were recently invited to Cranmore Mountain Resort for a free day of spring skiing. This free day of winter activities is made possible through an ongoing partnership between Cranmore and Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program.
Now in its fourth year, the partnership has enabled military families from all over New England to enjoy time together at Cranmore. The event is part of Home Base’s Adventure Series, a series of free events throughout the year aimed at strengthening military family bonds before, during and after deployment. Veterans and their families may explore a new sport, connect with other military families, and learn more about the clinical services, education, and research offered by Home Base. Although most of Home Base’s recent Adventure Series events have been held virtually amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Home Base team has worked diligently to resume some in-person events following CDC guidelines. This year’s series hosted a total of 17 Veterans and their families over the span of two days.
“These events are important bonding opportunities for our military families—especially in a time of isolation,” said Jacque Francona, Home Base Family Outreach Coordinator.
Cranmore provided equipment, instructors, lift tickets and lessons for all participants. Some of the military families that attended have been attending Home Base Adventure Series events for the past several years, while others will be attending an event for the very first time.
“We are very excited that we are able to continue this partnership, given the unique winter season that we are facing.” Said Karen Dolan, Cranmore Mountain SnowSports Director. “It was great to see families out on the slope having a great experience and enjoying great spring conditions and weather. Cranmore looks forward to working to bring the full program back next season.”
“Now more than ever, we appreciate Cranmore’s continued commitment to our mission and we’re looking forward to hitting the slopes today,” said Bill Davidson, Home Base’s Senior Director for Outreach, Peer Support, and Volunteers.
