Where is it?
Cold weather activities can be fun and rewarding if you're warm, dry, and comfortable. Proper clothing, and dressing in layers, will allow you to accommodate your body's ever changing temperature needs. When heading off to the mountain for a day of skiing or riding, consider the following:
Dress in layers:
Begin with a wicking layer such as polypropylene. This will "wick" or transport moisture away from your body, and will dry quickly.
Next, add an insulating layer such as wool, or fleece. This helps keep heat in and cold out.
Your outer layer (both jacket and pants) should be able to repel water from snow and sleet, block out any wind, and allow your body's perspiration to evaporate. Choose a jacket and pants that are made of waterproof, breathable materials.
Hats or Helmets:
Choose a hat made from fleece or wool. A good hat will retain up to 80% of your body's heat, and help keep you warm even on the coldest days. Helmets will also retain your body's heat, and afford the wearer added safety as well.
Gloves or Mittens:
Mittens are generally warmer than gloves. When making your selection, choose products that are waterproof, breathable, and well insulated.
Socks:
One pair of light to medium weight socks works best for skiing or riding. Too many pair may make your boots too tight and cause poor circulation. This can lead to cold feet. It's a good idea to bring along fresh socks to change into as needed, since damp socks will also turn your feet cold.
Eye Protection:
Always bring along sunglasses and goggles. On snowy, wet, cold, or windy days, goggles will afford you that extra protection and warmth for your face.
Sunscreen and Lip Balm:
Protect your skin and you lips from the sun, the wind, and the cold. A tube of lip balm in your jacket pocket, and sunscreen in your ski bag is a wise choice.
