MICHAEL COLEMAN

Comic/Writer/Actor

Bio

Described in media and entertainment circles as a “creative genius,” Michael Coleman has risen to prominence through his innovative work on Boston’s leading talk-radio station WBZ 1030 AM as well as on the witty “dumb guy” television commercials. But it is Coleman’s stage act that has earned him a loyal following. His dead-on impressions of Sean Connery and Tom Brokaw as well as twisted song parodies like “Jim’s (Morrison) Nursery Rhymes” have brought him regular gigs at places like Nick’s Comedy Stop and Giggles as well as at resorts and special events.

In 2007, Coleman received the prestigious Radio and Televisions Edward R. Murrow National award for journalistic excellence from the Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA). Coleman, was recognized for his writing and production of a feature entitled “Who’s on First,” a take-off on Abbott and Costello’s famous “Who’s on First” baseball comedy hit. Coleman’s entertaining spoof highlighted the Boston Red Sox players during the dramatic change in their roster during last year’s off–season.

Coleman has been a stand up comedian for the last 15 years and in 2000, released his first comedy CD entitled “Do NOT Read This.” Showcasing some of his best stand-up bits as well as several song parodies, the album has received critical acclaim. Gary Marino of Harmon Marino entertainment describes the CD as working much like his stage act: “Some of his comedy you’ll get after four or five seconds. Some of it you’ll still be trying to figure out in four or five years from now. It’s designed to do that.” From topics like military relaxation and convicted killer makeovers to censorship and political correctness, Coleman’s brilliant comedic talent shines.

Before joining WBZ as their Director of Creative Production, Coleman, a Bay State native, worked at WZLX and WBCN where his knack for creating intelligent, cutting edge material brought him to the attention of the news station. As he worked the station by day, he began to perform stand- up comedy by night, resulting in bits of humor slipping into promotional sports. The listeners loved it. Coleman’s dumb guy TV commercials have received wide acclaim as well, with the BOSTON GLOBE calling them “the most amusing and inventive spots any station has ever produced.”

In 1988, he founded ColeCuts Production, a full service production house specializing in creative writing for television and radio. Some of Coleman’s award- winning ads have included Belmont Springs, Cabot Cheese, Lincoln Park and WBZ-radio.
